The Nakivale Biochar Project is up and running with three kilns, an amazing team, and limitless excitement for what’s next! Based in Africa’s oldest refugee settlement in Uganda, this 2-years in the making mission empowers resident refugees to make and deploy biochar on local farms to combat erosion and boost crop production, while generating carbon removal credit revenues to fully cover their operations. A collaboration of Nakivale, OpenAir, C-Go, C-Capsule and Sacurn, this new model has enormous replication potential across East Africa and beyond. Stay tuned for opportunities to further support and follow.

We want to thank the 12 OpenAir members who contributed to our final Spring Crowdfund, donating $1,520 to help cover final mission costs; and to the amazing generous support of our partner Sacurn, which contributed $9,000 to make our campaign a success!

Carbon Gardener’s latest team and test site went live in May, with Weston High School, located in Weston, Connecticut, and is now up and running. Carbon Gardener is a global citizen science project that aims to enlist hundreds of university and secondary school teams to test and report data on the efficacy of enhanced rock weathering across different soil and environmental conditions, using simple raised beds and equipment. All data will be published, open source, after a year of testing, and will help fill knowledge gaps related to the performance of this critical carbon removal pathway.
